My Mom finally wanted to be on the list of smartphone people. Choosing a smartphone for a person who has never used a computer or a smartphone before is a difficult task.
For people new with a smartphone, the experience of smartphone ‘hang’ and long response time to press of a button can be a bad experience. So, I first listed out the constraints before choosing the right smartphone for her.
Constraint 1: Should not hang easily.
Constraint 2: Must be sturdy and strong in build quality.
Constraint 3: The touch experience must be smooth.
Constraint 4: Custom font size.
Constraint 5: Must give decent photo quality using the rear camera. The quality of the front camera is not very important.
Constraint 5: Budget < 8,000 INR
The first 3 constraints made sure that I had to go for a brand that produces quality smartphones. I do not have a good experience using Micromax, Spice, LYF as they lack quality. An 8MP camera gives images like a 2MP camera on most of the devices of these brands. Additionally, local brands have an issue with the overall user experience. Basically, they are not sturdy and strong.
Thus, I had to go for brands like Lenovo, Moto (both are same now), Samsung, Xiaomi.
With the budget of < 8,000, I had to go for Redmi 4A, it was a clear choice. But unfortunately, I did not like the way they are sold. Flash Sale, really? I could never book one. No matter how many times I press the ‘Add To Cart’ button, it simply won’t work. Blame me or my 1 Mbps Internet connection.
I cancelled my plan to buy Redmi 4A, the buying experience in itself was cumbersome. So finally after a lot of research, I shortlisted these 3 phones.
While Moto C plus and Lenovo Vibe K5 are priced lesser then Samsung Galaxy On5 Pro, I had to go for On5 pro. I saw the review of Moto and Lenovo phones, the biggest demerit being the lack of service centre. People from Delhi complain about not finding the right service centre for Lenovo cellphones. Me being from Guwahati had a negligible chance of finding one.
Hence Samsung Galaxy On5 Pro was a clear choice.
I bought the phone at a price of 7490, just to see a day later that the price was reduced to 7190. I asked Amazon CC if I would get the new discount. They asked me to cancel the old order and place a new order at the new price. The phone was delivered withing 5 days (Bangalore to Guwahati).
Recently, I saw the phone was priced at 6990 at the Amazon Sale of August 9 to August 12. No, I did not order again.
So, my Mother is happily using this phone now. She plays Temple Run 2 and Fruit Ninja very often. Video calls over WhatsApp are smooth. Build Quality and Touch experience is very good as well. She has not experienced any ‘hang’ till now. The font size can be increased which is very good for people with poor eye sight. Recently, I opened, Amazon app, WApp, Fruit Ninja, Temple Run 2, Chrome Browser all together and the phone still did not hang. Fair game. That’s the power of good brands like Samsung.
Basically, the phone is worth the buy in the price segment of < 8000 INR.
