Shillong was known as a Green and Clean City. But the State Government is making sure that the city gets rid of all trees without any assessment whatsoever.
On August 12th, 2017, three people died in the Shillong city when a tree fell on the vehicle during the incessant rain. The incident was obviously unfortunate and nothing can be worse than the loss of life.
The Meghalaya State Government announced an ex gratia of Rupees 4 lakh for the families who lost their dear ones.
Consequently, the State forest department expedited the process of trimming and chopping weak and vulnerable trees in the city and its outskirts
But the definition of weak and vulnerable trees was different for the Forest department. They went on to cut each and every tree they could find in the city. Such idiotic practice prompted the High Court to ban cutting of trees. Thanks to PIL filed by one, Mr Kaustav Paul.
The petitioner stated that the Government was mindlessly cutting down trees and if such a whimsical exercise is not checked ,the pristine green city of Shillong would be rather denuded of its green cover.
Now the question is, is the Forest Department of Meghalaya really stupid? How did the officials get a job in this department if they do not know the basics of Environment which are taught in Vth standard? With rising pollution in the city, trees are the only means to keep the city air clean to some extent.
How long will it take for some extra-talented people to realize how important trees are? Was concerned department too lazy to identify weak trees and hence went on to cut every tree?
Below are the snapshot from The Shillong Times regarding the news.
